Not only is he one of our good friends, he is the current Redbull Music 3Style champion! This man needs no introduction — He’s been killing it for years! We’re proud to present this week’s guest DJ — J Espinosa!

We sat down with the champ and asked him a few questions!

• What got you into DJing and how long has it been? And where do you see yourself a year from now, after winning the RB3Style? And how about in 5 years?

I’ve been DJing since 1998. I always thought DJs were so cool. When I was a kid I would always listen to the DJs mixing on the radio, that was one of my main inspirations for wanting to DJ. It started with me wanting to DJ on radio for SURE.

• Any plans on entering any other battles in the future? Maybe the Goldie Awards?

No plans on battling! But after winning Red Bull 3Style, I’m basically grandfathered into being a part of every Red Bull 3 Style World Tour from here on out. This year, 3 Style kicks off in Taipei, and will finish in Moscow!

• Are you also into production? If so, how would you define your sound? (If not, is it something you’ve considered?)

I don’t produce, other than making my own edits of songs to play when I DJ… But if I did, I’d probably make some mellow hyphy beats, or remixes of old r&b songs 🙂

• Where else can our audience hear you DJ/current residencies radio shows?

I play every Friday night on 99.7 (San Francisco, CA) @ 10PM. Shout out to the host Big Reid!

• Who are some of the artists you’ve worked with, opened/closed up for?

I’ve opened/performed at tons of big concerts… Drake, Justin Bieber, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, Usher, Britney Spears… you name it! I also DJ for the Oakland Raiders every home game, inside the Oakland Coluseum, for about 50,000 screaming football fans. That’s pretty crazy. Recently I linked up with Too Short, and we sat in his studio to write a custom version of Blow The Whistle. He recorded it for me to use at the Redbull 3 Style World finals.

• If you could play music anywhere in the world right now, what are the top 3 places you would want to DJ?

Hmm… I can’t say any specific Country, or city… There are dope parties all over the world! Where people come out because they know its gonna be different than the cookie cutter DJ sets they probably hear at clubs every weekend. More about the music & the vibes, and who’s DJing, over the VIP experience. So to answer this… Anywhere where people have an open mind and are willing to let the DJ drive the ship! My fav party I’ve DJed at might be the Do Over… That type of vibe 🙂
